The Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Nuclear Engineering (MANE) is a collaborative community of talented people – faculty, staff, students, and alumni – rooted in a long and impactful history, working together to address the world’s most pressing technological problems.
Our three programs are among the oldest in the US, shaping the practice of each discipline throughout the world. Our graduates include leading aircraft designers, the first woman to earn a PhD in Mechanical Engineering in the US, a pioneer in nuclear magnetic resonance imaging, an astronaut, academic and corporate leaders, and numerous inventors and entrepreneurs.
Today, MANE provides students a highly valued, world-class education, and an environment for our students to develop as leaders, problem solvers, and doers. Students and faculty have access to world-class facilities and an atmosphere that promotes interdisciplinary collaborations. Our research addresses some of the world’s most pressing technological challenges—from energy and sustainable development to materials, manufacturing, controls, adaptive and resilient systems, biotechnology, and human health.
In MANE, we value:
- Integrity – scientific and ethical rigor, honesty, and responsibility
- Collaboration – a safe environment that encourages open, respectful interactions
- Innovation – creativity and problem solving
- Diversity – broaden our perspectives
- Equity – fair treatment and equitable access to opportunities, resources, and advancement
