Dr. Richard T. Lahey, Jr. Gave Inaugural Lecture

Dr. Richard T. Lahey, Jr., is an emeritus professor of nuclear engineering at Rensselaer. He is an international authority in multiphase flow and heat transfer technology and is a specialist in nuclear reactor safety. He was formerly the Director of the Center for Multiphase Research (CMR), the Dean of Engineering , the Chairman of the Department of Nuclear Engineering & Science and the Chair of the Faculty Senate at Rensselaer. Prior to joining Rensselaer in 1975, he held several technical and managerial positions with the General Electric Company, including overall responsibility for all domestic and foreign R&D programs associated with Boiling Water Nuclear Reactor (BWR) thermal-hydraulics and safety technology. He has received numerous prestigious honors and awards, including the E.O. Lawrence Memorial Award of the US Department of Energy (USDOE), the Seaborg Medal of the American Nuclear Society (ANS), the AIChE’s Kern Award and the Glenn Murphy Award of the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE). He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) and a foreign member of the Russian Academy of Science (RAS) in Bashkortostan. He is also a Life Fellow of the American Nuclear Society (ANS) and American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), was Editor of the Journal of Nuclear Engineering & Design, is a founding member of the Board of Managers of PJM Interconnection, LLC., the largest supplier of wholesale electricity in the country, and is a life member of Rensselaer's Benjamin Franklin Greene Society of Patroons. Professor Lahey has been a Fulbright, a Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), and an Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung Scholar and has held visiting senior faculty positions with numerous foreign universities.
